Good Things in Life Podcast: Let's Talk Privilege with Alison Gomez & Nikki Haffner
“Privilege is a word that’s been getting a lot of attention lately, but what does it really mean? Privilege isn’t just a thing some people have and others don’t—like so much else, it comes with layers of complexity. Alison Gomez and Nikki Haffner know how to talk about privilege. As founders and owners of Rebel Revolution, they consult with individuals and offer training to help people in positions of power learn to combat systems of oppression that privilege the white, male, heterosexist, Christian, able-bodied perspective. I welcomed them to the podcast for this episode to talk about privilege and how to identify it, de-weaponize it, and pave the way for greater equity in future generations. We also chatted about intersectionality and the ways to uplift different social movements without co-opting the voices of marginalized peoples. Alison Gomez is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California with an online practice specializing in empowering women of color. She graduated with a BA in psychology from San Francisco State University and an MS in counselor psychology from California State University, Bakersfield. Nikki Haffner is an author and podcaster with a bachelor’s degree in psychology who is currently working on her first novel. As co-founders and co-owners of Rebel Revolution, Alison and Nikki are dedicated to acknowledging and challenging the weaponization of privilege and bias prevalent in the world today. If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by conversations about privilege or been unsure about how to join them, this podcast is a great place to start!”
